MS Hydrophobic PES Membrane

MS Hydrophobic PES Membrane is prepared by hydrophobic modification process of sterilizing grade PES hydrophilic membrane, which is specially designed for rapid air filtration or sterilization ventilation, and it can also prevent liquid penetration or condensate clogging. Compared to traditional gas filtration media, PES hydrophobic membranes are resistant to Gamma irradiation and have virtually no change in mechanical properties after high-dose irradiation, making them particularly suitable for air sterilization applications that require irradiation sterilization.

FAQ

Basic Characteristics

1.What are the main advantages of PES hydrophobic membranes compared to PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) hydrophobic membranes?

Compared to PTFE, PES membranes are completely fluorine-free and comply with PFAS regulations. Additionally, PES membranes exhibit superior stability under gamma radiation sterilization.

2.What is the “hydrophobicity” rating of your company’s PES hydrophobic membranes? What is the maximum water pressure they can withstand without leaking?

The water contact angle of our PES hydrophobic membranes typically ranges between 100° and 120°. The specific water pressure resistance (static or inlet pressure) depends on the membrane thickness and pore size:

  • Standard 0.22μm pore size: Water pressure resistance ≥ 2.4 MPa
  • Standard 0.45 μm pore size: Water pressure resistance ≥ 1.5 MPa

If specific pressure resistance values are required, we offer custom membranes with higher water pressure resistance.

Applications and Selection

1.Can this membrane be used for filtering organic solvents such as alcohol and IPA(isopropyl alcohol)?

Yes. PES material inherently possesses excellent resistance to organic solvents. However, please note that low-surface-tension liquids (such as alcohol) can easily penetrate hydrophobic membranes under pressure. If your application involves filtering organic solvents, we recommend selecting our “Solvent-Resistant” series (with enhanced cross-linking treatment) or reducing the operating pressure differential.

2.Does the product support gamma ray sterilization or autoclave sterilization?

Yes. Our PES hydrophobic membranes have been validated to withstand 50 kGy gamma irradiation sterilization as well as autoclave sterilization at 134°C for 30 minutes over 20 cycles. The decline in the membrane’s hydrophobicity (contact angle) before and after sterilization is controlled within 5%, ensuring that the sterile barrier function of medical devices remains intact.

Process and Customization

1.Are your films supplied in rolls or sheets? Do you support backing lamination?

We offer rolls with a standard width of 260 mm. For narrower widths, we expect to provide more customized width options once our slitting machine becomes operational in June 2026. To enhance stiffness for use in automated assembly lines, we support thermal lamination of PES hydrophobic film with PET, PE, or PP non-woven backing, facilitating ultrasonic welding or heat sealing for our customers.
