1.What are the application cases for the hollow fiber filters produced by Membrane Solutions?
The CleaSep hollow fiber filters have been successfully applied in:
- Exosome concentration
- Antibody concentration
- Liposome concentration
- Nanoparticle collection
- Clarification of various E. coli lysates and yeast fermentation broths
- Cell perfusion culture
- Beer crossflow filtration
- Wine clarification filtration
- Tea beverage clarification filtration, among others
2.What application cases are currently available?
The main application cases are in biopharmaceuticals—including exosomes, antibodies, mycoplasma, viral particles, liposomes, collagen, and fermentation cells—as well as in the beer industry.
3.What are the application cases of MS hollow fiber filters in ex4.osome concentration, and how effective are they?
The MS hollow fiber filters have successful applications in exosome concentration. For different exosome systems, we generally recommend removal ratings of 100–500 kD.
4.What are the main differences between hollow fiber modules and membrane cassettes in terms of applications and product performance? Which one is currently more widely used in the market?
Both are typical products for tangential flow filtration in biopharmaceuticals. Membrane cassettes have a longer history, are more mature, and have more well-developed process designs.
Hollow fiber modules are newer and offer unique advantages in certain applications:
For shear-sensitive feed solutions, hollow fibers provide better control with minimal shear, making them preferable to cassettes.
For large-volume liquid processing (e.g., clarification filtration), hollow fiber modules also have an advantage over cassettes.
5.What are the materials and features of hollow fiber membranes?
They are made of modified polyethersulfone (mPES), featuring low adsorption and easy cleaning, and represent the mainstream material on the market.
In the future, there are plans to develop versions made of polysulfone (PSU) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).
6.What removal ratings are available for the hollow fiber filters produced by Membrane Solutions?
The CleaSep hollow fiber filters are available in:
Microfiltration series: 0.22 / 0.45 / 0.65 μm
Ultrafiltration series: 10 / 30 / 50 / 100 / 300 / 500 / 750 / 1000 kD
7.What filtration areas are available for the hollow fiber filters produced by Membrane Solutions?
The CleaSep hollow fiber filters cover a wide range of specifications for laboratory, pilot, and large-scale applications, with membrane areas ranging from 30 cm² to 6.5 m². Customized products with different effective lengths and filtration areas can also be developed upon customer request.
8.How should one choose the removal rating for a hollow fiber membrane?
Selection is based on the target molecule:
For permeation mode, the membrane pore size should be at least 5–10 times larger than the target molecule.
For retention mode, the membrane pore size should be about 1/3–1/5 of the target molecular weight.
9.What are the features / key selling points of the hollow fiber filters produced by Membrane Solutions?
The CleaSep hollow fiber filters feature:
- High flux, delivering greater filtration efficiency
- Uniform pore size distribution, ensuring higher retention rates and recovery
- Comprehensive product range, covering wide removal ratings and diverse filtration areas
- Excellent cost-effectiveness
10.Are the hollow fiber membranes resistant to NaOH, and if so, what concentrations can they tolerate?
They have good chemical compatibility and can withstand higher temperatures, pressures, and cleaning concentrations, including up to 1 N NaOH.
11.What is the operating pH range of the hollow fiber membranes?
The hollow fiber membranes can tolerate a pH range of 1–14.
12.What is the pressure resistance of the hollow fiber filters?
Ultrafiltration: Maximum feed pressure 36 psi / 2.5 bar @ 20°C, maximum transmembrane pressure 30 psi / 2.1 bar @ 20°C
Microfiltration: Maximum feed pressure 36 psi / 2.5 bar @ 20°C, maximum transmembrane pressure 20 psi / 1.4 bar @ 20°C
13.Can our hollow fiber filters be steam sterilized?
They can be Steam-in-Place (SIP), with a one-time quality guarantee. When ordering, add the suffix -HT to the product code. The typical Steam-in-Place (SIP) conditions are 121°C for about 20 minutes.
14.What factory standards do the hollow fiber filters produced by Membrane Solutions comply with?
The CleaSep hollow fiber filters comply with USP87 biocompatibility testing and FDA21CFR food-grade certification. Each product undergoes water flux and integrity testing before leaving the factory.
15.Is the spinning process used by Membrane Solutions (MS) independently developed?Does the fiber structure of MS membranes meet international standards?
The CleaSep hollow fiber filters by MS are entirely independently developed, from fiber development to module design. Compared with leading international competitors, the overall performance of MS biopharmaceutical filtration products reaches about 90% of the top-level brands, with certain performance aspects (e.g., filtration efficiency) even surpassing the leading brands.
16.How are the hollow fiber filters produced by Membrane Solutions used?
