Sample Preparation (analytical chemistry)

Sample Preparation, in analytical chemistry, the processes in which a representative piece of material is extracted from a larger amount and readied for analysis. Sampling and sample preparation have a unique meaning and special importance when applied to the field of analytical chemistry. Analytical chemistry in all its diverse forms can be looked upon as a multistep endeavor with the measurement phase but one link near the end of a chain of operations. That chain begins with sampling, an essential process that underlies all subsequent work and imparts relevance to what would otherwise be a meaningless exercise.

Analytical Sample Prep Products for a Range of Applications and Tests

Sampling is critically relevant everywhere that analytical chemistry has a role to play. Ambient sampling of the atmosphere is used to provide analytical data on seasonal or other trends that can be correlated with natural or societal processes. For example, the extent of the Antarctic ozone hole and its relation to fluorocarbon use were confirmed by this means. Near ground level, monitoring sites provide data for air-quality assessment, for the design of pollution-control strategies, and for regulatory enforcement. Groundwater-monitoring wells are used to sample aquifers in order to ensure water quality.

Septa Selection Guide

PTFE

  • Recommended for single injection application
  • Ideal for use in MS applications
  • Excellent solvent resistance and chemical compatibility
  • Does not reseal upon punching
  • Not for Long-term sample storage

PTFE/Silicone

  • Recommended for multiple injection and sample storage
  • Excellent resealing
  • PTFE chemical resistance until punctured, then will have the chemical compatibility of silicone
  • Working temperature range from -40°C to 200°C

Pre-slit PTFE/Silicone

  • Prevent vacuum formation in vials
  • Eliminates coring from bottom draw-port needles
  • Good resealing capabilities
  • Recommended for multiple injections
  • PTFE chemical resistance until punctured, then will have the chemical compatibility of silicone
  • Working temperature range from -40°C to 200°C

MS® 2ml Clear/Amber Sample Vials

MS® Sample Vials are manufactured from borosilicate glass and meets ASTM Type I Class A and USP Type I standards, which improves your laboratory productivity by reducing costs and saving time. These products considerably reduce the risk of analytical test results compromised by ghost peaks, damaged needles or dislodged septa, decreasing analysis failures and sample returns.

MS® Crimp Caps for 2ml Sample Vial

MS® Crimp Caps squeeze the septum between the rim of the glass vial and the crimped aluminum cap. This forms an excellent seal preventing evaporation. The septum stays seated during piercing by the auto sampler needle. The crimp cap vial requires crimping tools to carry out the sealing process.

MS® Screw Caps for 2ml Sample Vials

MS® Screw Caps are universal. Screwing the cap applies a mechanical force that squeezes the septum between the glass rim and the cap. Screw caps form an excellent seal and mechanically hold the septum in place during piercing. No tools are required for assembly.
